STAGE 1: FIRST 6 WEEKS

Aims:

Extension to 0 degrees (may not be possible if pt had long pre-op history of fixed flexion deformity)

Increasing flexion: Aim for as much flexion as possible

Wean off walking aids as comfort, swelling and gait allows

Achieve independence with home exercise programme

 

Treatment

Swelling management

Gait re-education

Stretches

Exercises:  Knee ROM, stabilising muscle strengthening, proprioceptive, core stability and balance

Hydrotherapy and electrotherapy: if available and thought to be appropriate

Manual therapy:  Soft tissue and joint mobilisations as felt appropriate

 

STAGE 2: 6 weeks and onwards

Aims:

Safe and independently mobile without aids

Ascend and descend stairs reciprocally

Fully independent in ADLs

Return to leisure activity (impact and pivoting sports not recommended)

 

Treatment

As Stage 1 plus:

Exercises: muscle strengthen through range, dynamic stabilisation exercises

Proprioception / balance – wobble boards, trampette etc as appropriate (higher level expected of PFJR and UKR than TKR)
